Calls for Small Art Around New England

Fall is a time when small works shows take over galleries across New England. These often annual affairs encourage artists to make pieces in little scales and at modest price points. They can be a challenge for makers who tend to work big, but allow artists to share their work and for collectors to buy great things that fit into their homes and budgets. Many organizations require membership to take part in their small works shows, but there are some that are open to a broader artistic pool. Below are a few select calls for small art going on throughout the region. They are listed in order by deadline date. For information on each of these calls, please reach out to the respective gallery or organization.

The Local New London
The Great Big Little Art Show
Deadline: Registration begins September 27, Rolling

The Local, a new art gallery and event space in New London, Connecticut is hosting a little art show in which the gallery will provide participating artists with three 10” x 10” canvases for a fee of $25. The resulting exhibition will take place November 22 - January 3. Viewers will be able to vote for favorites and three top works will receive $100 prizes and a future three person show. Pillar Gallery + Projects
NANO
Deadline: October 15, 2024

Pillar Gallery in Concord, New Hampshire is taking submission for its NANO small works show. Two-dimension works may be a maximum of 6” x 6” or 8” x 8” if framed and three-dimensional works may be 4” x 4” x 4”. There is a suggested application fee of $5. Artistree Community Arts Center
Small Works 2024
Deadline: October 30, 2024

Artistree Community Arts Center in South Pomfret, Vermont is accepting applications for its small works show in a range of media. Two-dimensional works may be up to 12” x 12”, and three-dimensional works may be 6” x 6” x 6”. Artists may submit up to 5 works for sale for $15. The show opens November 15 and runs through December 21. There is a separate concurrent call for entry for small ceramics. Details on the small works show can be found at www.artistreevt.org.

Cambridge Art Association
2024 Holiday Small Works Sale
Deadline: November 12, 2024

The Cambridge Art Association is seeking artworks for its annual small works sale. There is a $15 fee to participate, and a size limit of 14”. All submissions must be priced at $150 + Massachusetts sales tax. Sales are split 50/50 between artists and the CAA, and this event is a fundraiser for CAA’s Emergency Fund for Visual Artists. Morini Gallery at Mass Arts Center
2024 Small Works Juried Exhibition
Deadline: November 12, 2024

The Morini Gallery at the Mass Arts Center in Mansfield, Massachusetts is seeking entries of two-dimensional works for its small works show. Works may not exceed 20” in any directions. The exhibition is juried and includes a “next tier” jurying level that allows for artists to sell additional works. The show is on view December 4 to January 26. The New Art Center
Small Works Exhibition 2024
Deadline: November 12, 2024

The New Art Center will be hosting a juried small works show in the New Art Corridor in Newtonville, Massachusetts. Two-dimensional works may be a max of 12” x 12” and three-dimensional works may be a maximum of 8” x 8” x 8”. Artists may submit up to ten works for consideration and there is no fee to apply. The Collaborative
Small Works Show
Deadline: November 17, 2024

The Collaborative in Warren, Rhode Island, is seeking entries for its annual Small Works Show. The show is open to all non-functional two and three-dimensional works. The size limit is 8” or 9” if framed. The submission fees for this show start at $10 for one work, up to $30 for the maximum of four works. No commission is taken on sales. This fall there are a range of opportunities for artists to share their work in and around greater Boston and Worcester, Massachusetts. Unbound Visual Arts
Touching Collage
Deadline: September 22, 2024

Unbound Visual Arts seeks collage artists to submit work for its Touching Collage exhibition, to take place at the organization’s Overlook Gallery at 175 Washington Street in Brighton. The show will take place October 27 - December 8. The entry fee for this exhibition is $10 for the first work and $5 for each additional work. Worcester Art Museum
Art of the Macabre Open Call
Deadline: September 22, 2024

The Worcester Art Museum seeks artworks for a free and non-juried exhibition focused on grim, dark, or scary themes. Open to artists of all ages from throughout New England, the exhibition will be installed in the museum’s Education Wing and will be on view September 25 - October 31, 2024. Worcester Center for Crafts Handcrafted Shop
Annual Cup Show 2024
Deadline: September 27, 2024

The Handcrafted Shop at the Worcester Center for Crafts seeks submissions for its popular Annual Cup Show. The show will take place December 5 - 24 and is open to functional ceramics sized up to 10” tall and up to 6” wide. Works may not be over $150 in price. The exhibition is being juried by ceramist Maliya Travers-Crumb and there will be three cash prizes awarded. Entry fee is $30 for up to 6 artworks. BIPOC artists are eligible for a $15 fee. New Art Center
Fall 2024 Exhibition
Deadline: September 29, 2024

The New Art Center in Newton seeks applicants its unique Fall 2024 Exhibition, focused on finished and unfinished works in dialogue with one another. Artists are invited to submit one completed work and one work that fell short of their expectations to be shown together. The exhibition is being juried by painter, printmaker, and collage artist Julie Fei-Fan Balzer. The show will take place October 10 - November 12, 2024 at the New Art Corridor at Trio Newton. The James Library and Center for the Arts
Fall Juried Exhibition
Deadline: September 29, 2024

The James Library and Center for the Arts in Norwell is accepting applications for its Fall Juried Exhibition, featuring three cash prizes. The exhibition is open to work in all media and is being juried by Makayla May, Curatorial Associate in Modern and Contemporary Art at the Art Institute of Chicago. Bromfield Gallery
Solo Exhibition Competition
Deadline: October 1, 2024

Bromfield Gallery in SOWA is seeking applications for its annual Solo Exhibition Competition. Juried by gallerist LaiSun Keane, the competition will award two all expense paid solo exhibitions to New England artists who have not previously had a solo show in a commercial gallery. Piano Craft Gallery and the New England Art Center
Speak Up III
Deadline: October 10, 2024

The Piano Craft Gallery in Boston is seeking submissions for Speak Up III, an exhibition organized by Claudia Fiks of the New England Art Center and juried by Cameron Summer of Boston Art Inc. The exhibition is meant to highlight works that raise awareness and inspire change. Works in a wide range of media will be accepted and the show will take place October 25 - November 11. City of Boston
Fay chandler emerging artist exhibition
Deadline: October 20, 2024

The City of Boston is seeking applicants for the annual Fay Chandler Emerging Artists Exhibition, to take place in the Boston City Hall Galleries November 18 - December 27, 2024. This show is open to any artist in Greater Boston who is at the start of their career and has been creating work for five years are less. Greater Boston is defined as Essex, Middlesex, Norfolk, Plymouth or Suffolk Counties. Full information and the application can be found via Submittable by clicking here.

Seven Opportunities for Rhode Island Artists

Summer tends to be a slow period for artist opportunities, but there are still calls for art and sources for funding. Below is a brief compilation of seven opportunities for Rhode Island artists open in late summer of 2024. Three are for competitive juried exhibitions at different venues, two are for artist grants, one is for a large public art call, and one is for a workforce training program. Bristol Art Museum and Rogers Free Library
Knock on Wood Juried Exhibition
Deadline: August 20, 2024

The Bristol Art Museum seeks smaller scale “art that is illusionary, magical, or whimsical that may be rooted in luck or superstition” for a show at Rogers Free Library. This show will be juried by RIC Professor Stephen Fisher. Entry fees start at $25 for non-members and entries are due by August 20. Warwick Center for the Arts
38th Annual Rhode Island Open Juried Exhibition
Deadline: August 24, 2024

The Warwick Center for the Arts invites Rhode Island artists to submit work for its Annual Open Juried Exhibition, which features works in a range of media by artists from across the state. $400 in prizes will be awarded and the juror is sculptor Victoria Guerina. Entry fees start at $25 for non-members. Details on this call are posted at www.warwickcfa.org.

Pawtucket Arts Collaborative
The Color of Sound Juried Exhibition
Deadline: August 25, 2024

The Pawtucket Arts Collaborative is seeking entries for a juried exhibition with a theme of “art inspired by music”. This call features $800 in prizes and the show will be juried by William Shaff. The Steel Yard
Welding Workforce Training Program
Deadline: September 6, 2023

Get paid to learn how to weld at The Steel Yard in Providence. This unique offering is a 32 hour job-readiness program, which develops skills that can be used to create public art and offers a stipend of $250. Completion of the program makes individuals eligible for a three month long part time apprenticeship in The Steel Yard’s Public Projects Department. Preference is given to applicants who reside in Central Providence. Full details on workforce training can be found at www.thesteelyard.org.

Interlace Grant Fund
Emergency and Project Grants
Deadline: September 7 and 15, 2024

The Interlace Grant Fund is accepting applications for both Emergency Grants (due September 7) and Project Grants (due September 15). Interlace is a regional regranting partner of the Andy Warhol Foundation. Emergency Grants range from $100-$500 and are for Providence-based artists impacted by crises. Project Grants range from $4,000-$6,000 and are aimed at supporting artist-driven projects in the Providence area. Learn more about these great funding opportunities at www.interlacefund.org.

RI Fire Academy
Request for Artists for Public Artwork
Deadline: September 3, 2024

The Rhode Island State Council on the Arts seeks artists to share their qualifications for a substantial public art project at the Rhode Island Fire Academy Phase 3 Expansion as part of the State’s Public Art Law which mandates that 1% of the budget for construction of public buildings be used on artwork. The budget for this project is $28,000 and applications are open to artists in New England and New York. The deadline to submit is September 3, 2024 and the application is live at www.callforentry.org.

Artist Open Studio Tour Grants
Deadline: Rolling

Did you know that RISCA offers small grants in support of Artist Open Studios? The grant amount is $750 and grants are available on a rolling basis until funding runs out each fiscal year. Funding must support studio tours that feature multiple artists in a specific geographic area. Consider applying and getting a studio tour started in your studio building or neighborhood. The excitement of cities and urban spaces has inspired thousands of artists. Gallerist and curator Michael Rose seeks original artworks for a virtual exhibition focused on the continued resonance of urban places in visual art. A competitive juried exhibition presented online, this show will feature a thoughtfully curated selection of exceptional artworks that derive their subjects or inspirations from the city. Cities in Art is part of an ongoing series of popular virtual exhibitions hosted by Rose on his website michaelrosefineart.com.

This show is open to work in all media and styles. Selected artworks will be featured in an online gallery for a minimum one month, and will then be archived and remain available for viewing indefinitely. Several artworks in the show will also be highlighted individually on social media. One artist will receive a future solo virtual feature. All submitted works must be available for sale. Sales will be handled via the artists, who will retain 100% of the proceeds.

To enter, artists must submit their virtual application using JotForm. Applicants must fill out the application in full to be considered.

Eligibility:
This is an international call for art and artists from all backgrounds are welcome to apply. Current members of the Providence Art Club are not eligible for this call.

Specifications:
Each applicant may submit one artwork for consideration for a non-refundable entry fee of $10. Works should be original and no more than four years old. Works in all media and styles that employ urban themes as an element, subject, or inspiration will be considered. Along with their artwork image, artists must submit a full application. All applications must be submitted via Jotform. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Application materials that are emailed to the organizer will not be considered.

Sales:
All submissions must be available for sale, and the retail price must be listed publicly during the exhibition. There will be no commission on sales that result from this show. Collectors will be encouraged to contact artists directly, and should they inquire about a specific work with Michael he will relay them to artists to process sales, with artists retaining 100% of the sale price.

$10 per entry. The purpose of this small entry fee is to defray the costs involved in assembling and promoting the exhibition. Should works sell, artists will retain 100% of the sale price. In 2020, I was fortunate to host two exciting online exhibitions: my Social Distancing Virtual Exhibition and my 31 Under 30 Exhibition of emerging artists. These shows allowed me to use my platform to share the work of exciting artists in formats that were more accessible for both entry and viewing than the average juried exhibition. In 2021 I would like to continue curating virtual exhibitions, and the first show I’m working on will be a selection of 21 Artists to Follow in 2021. The full call for this show is below. 30 Under 30: Emerging Artists in The United States

A Virtual Exhibition by Michael Rose Fine Art

Gallerist Michael Rose seeks emerging artists for a special virtual exhibition celebrating exciting works by young artists. This show is open to work in any media produced by artists of all backgrounds living and working throughout the United States. Applicants should be aged 29 or younger as of October 1, 2020. Thirty works will be selected. Each selected artwork will be featured in a gallery on Michael’s website, and will also be highlighted individually on his social media channels. One artist will receive a future solo virtual feature. All submitted works should be available for sale. Should works sell, artists will retain 100% of the proceeds. About Michael Rose
Michael is an art historian, gallerist, and appraiser based in New England. Since 2014, Michael has served as the Gallery Manager at the historic Providence Art Club, where he oversees a rigorous exhibition schedule spread across three unique gallery spaces. In addition to his work at the Club, Michael provides independent advisory services and appraisals, teaching services, and has juried numerous exhibitions. He has spoken at organizations as varied as the RISD Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Bristol Art Museum, taught longer form courses in RISD’s Continuing Education Department, and published essays and reviews in Big Red & Shiny, Art New England, and others. Michael earned his BA in Art History at Providence College, and his Certificate in Art Appraisal at New York University. A sought-after art professional, Michael has a strong audience in the Northeast, as well as throughout the United States and abroad.
