Show Art in (and Around) Boston and Worcester this Fall

This fall there are a range of opportunities for artists to share their work in and around greater Boston and Worcester, Massachusetts. In this post, I have compiled a selection of calls for art in and around these two cities that might appeal to artists throughout New England and beyond. They are listed in order by deadline date. Unbound Visual Arts
Touching Collage
Deadline: September 22, 2024

Unbound Visual Arts seeks collage artists to submit work for its Touching Collage exhibition, to take place at the organization’s Overlook Gallery at 175 Washington Street in Brighton. The show will take place October 27 - December 8. The entry fee for this exhibition is $10 for the first work and $5 for each additional work. Worcester Art Museum
Art of the Macabre Open Call
Deadline: September 22, 2024

The Worcester Art Museum seeks artworks for a free and non-juried exhibition focused on grim, dark, or scary themes. Open to artists of all ages from throughout New England, the exhibition will be installed in the museum’s Education Wing and will be on view September 25 - October 31, 2024. Worcester Center for Crafts Handcrafted Shop
Annual Cup Show 2024
Deadline: September 27, 2024

The Handcrafted Shop at the Worcester Center for Crafts seeks submissions for its popular Annual Cup Show. The show will take place December 5 - 24 and is open to functional ceramics sized up to 10” tall and up to 6” wide. Works may not be over $150 in price. The exhibition is being juried by ceramist Maliya Travers-Crumb and there will be three cash prizes awarded. Entry fee is $30 for up to 6 artworks. BIPOC artists are eligible for a $15 fee. New Art Center
Fall 2024 Exhibition
Deadline: September 29, 2024

The New Art Center in Newton seeks applicants its unique Fall 2024 Exhibition, focused on finished and unfinished works in dialogue with one another. Artists are invited to submit one completed work and one work that fell short of their expectations to be shown together. The exhibition is being juried by painter, printmaker, and collage artist Julie Fei-Fan Balzer. The show will take place October 10 - November 12, 2024 at the New Art Corridor at Trio Newton. The James Library and Center for the Arts
Fall Juried Exhibition
Deadline: September 29, 2024

The James Library and Center for the Arts in Norwell is accepting applications for its Fall Juried Exhibition, featuring three cash prizes. The exhibition is open to work in all media and is being juried by Makayla May, Curatorial Associate in Modern and Contemporary Art at the Art Institute of Chicago. Submission fee is $13 per entry for up to six entries. Full details and information can be found at www.jameslibrary.org.

Bromfield Gallery
Solo Exhibition Competition
Deadline: October 1, 2024

Bromfield Gallery in SOWA is seeking applications for its annual Solo Exhibition Competition. Juried by gallerist LaiSun Keane, the competition will award two all expense paid solo exhibitions to New England artists who have not previously had a solo show in a commercial gallery. Piano Craft Gallery and the New England Art Center
Speak Up III
Deadline: October 10, 2024

The Piano Craft Gallery in Boston is seeking submissions for Speak Up III, an exhibition organized by Claudia Fiks of the New England Art Center and juried by Cameron Summer of Boston Art Inc. The exhibition is meant to highlight works that raise awareness and inspire change. Works in a wide range of media will be accepted and the show will take place October 25 - November 11. There is a fee of $15 for one piece and $5 for additional pieces for non-member artists. Full details can be found at www.pianocraftgallery.com.

City of Boston
Fay chandler emerging artist exhibition
Deadline: October 20, 2024

The City of Boston is seeking applicants for the annual Fay Chandler Emerging Artists Exhibition, to take place in the Boston City Hall Galleries November 18 - December 27, 2024. This show is open to any artist in Greater Boston who is at the start of their career and has been creating work for five years are less. Greater Boston is defined as Essex, Middlesex, Norfolk, Plymouth or Suffolk Counties. Full information and the application can be found via Submittable by clicking here.

Seven Grants for New England Artists

With Labor Day comes a reminder that artists too are laborers and the visual arts involves a great deal of hard work that is often underfunded. That being said, there are always interesting grant opportunities available. It sometimes takes some searching to find funding opportunities, but I have assembled a collection of six grants with deadlines coming up that are aimed at artists across New England. They are listed in order by deadline date. For more information on any of these grants, please follow the links provided or reach out to the respective grantmaking organization.

Vermont Arts Council
Artist Development Grants
Deadline: September 10, 2024

The Vermont Arts Council’s Artist Development Grant program is accepting applications through September 10, 2024. With maximum awards of $2,000 per artist, this program aims to aid individual artists with expenses related to things like professional development, professional services, and other costs. This year, flood relief is also an eligibility area. Details and full application can be found at www.vermontartscouncil.org.

Artadia
Boston Award
Deadline: September 15, 2024

Artadia is currently seeking applications for individual artist awards in a variety of cities including Boston. Awards are $15,000 and are unrestricted. This award is is open to contemporary artists who live and work within Bristol, Essex, Middlesex, Norfolk, Plymouth, and Suffolk Counties. Learn more and apply at www.artadia.org.

New England Foundation for the Arts
Public Art Learning Fund
Deadline: September 16, 2024

The New England Foundation for the Arts is providing grants of $500 - $3,000 to support professional development for artists seeking to improve their public art practices. Applications are due by September 16 and funding can be used for professional development in 2025. Full details can be found at www.nefa.org.

The Awesome Foundation
September grant
Deadline: September 18, 2024

The Awesome Foundation awards $1,000 grants monthly to a broad range of projects. Applications are due by the third Wednesday of the month, or by the time the 100th application comes in, whichever comes first. There are several chapters of this funder in New England including serving Rockport and Georgetown, Massachusetts, as well as individual chapters for Connecticut and Rhode Island. Connecticut Office of the Arts
Artist Fellowship Program
Deadline: September 20, 2024

The Connecticut Office of the Arts is seeking applicants for its Artist Fellowship Program through September 20, 2024. Grants in three categories will be awarded. Emerging Recognition Grants of $1,000, Artist Fellowship Grants of $3,000, and Artistic Excellence Grants of $5,000. Full details and application can be found at portal.ct.gov.


Monadnock Arts Alive
Mini Grants
Deadline: September 22, 2024

Artists in the Monadnock region of New Hampshire are eligible to apply for mini grant funding from Arts Alive through September 22, 2024. These small grants of $250 are designed to support emerging artists as well as those experiencing financial hardship. Full details and application can be found at www.monadnockartslive.org.

Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation
Artist’s Resource Trust Fund for Individuals
Deadline: October 15, 2024

Grants ranging from $1,000 - $10,000 are available to artists throughout New England and parts of New York from the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation’s ART Fund. Monies from this grant can be used toward a wide variety of expenses and are intended to support mid-career artists who also have demonstrated financial need.
