Michael Rose, Midnight Mansard, acrylic on cradled panel, 4” x 4”, 2022
About Michael Rose
In addition to his work as a gallerist and writer Michael continues to make art, with a focus on smaller works - typically grisaille acrylics on panels. Michael’s first exposure to art took place during childhood at the Greater Fall River Art Association, in Fall River, Massachusetts, where he received private instruction for ten years. He continued studying studio art in Advanced Placement courses in high school and through a number of studio classes taken alongside his art history major course-load at Providence College. Additionally, he has studied encaustic painting with Taleen Batalian at the Providence Art Club.
Artist’s Statement
In my work I examine the aesthetic qualities of nocturnal cities: their gritty textures, their rich contrasts, their inky depths. Through the use of intimately scaled and often improvisational pen and ink drawings, as well as acrylic paintings, I depict streets and neighborhoods at night. I draw inspiration from the works of New York artists like John Sloan, Martin Lewis, and Edward Hopper. Sourced from personal experience and memory, the resulting images are at once familiar and mysterious. They convey, in the words of F. Scott Fitzgerald, the view of ‘a casual watcher in the darkening streets’.
