Form and Shape
The Figure in Contemporary Art
On view november - december 2021
The human figure has long been, and continues to be, an important source of inspiration for artists. In this juried virtual exhibition, artists from all backgrounds were invited to submit their recent works that drew on the figure for inspiration. From a diverse pool of applicants, twenty-seven artworks in a range of media were selected. The works presented were created by artists working today throughout the United States and abroad.
In these works, the figure is sometimes included explicitly and representationally, and other times is merely indicated or used as a jumping off point. Together, the works included in this competitive exhibition represent a cross-section of interpretations of the figure in contemporary art. When perusing the featured artworks, I hope you will build connections between different views of the figure and different ways of making. I also encourage you to click through to artists’ websites to learn more about them and their respective practices.
Please note: This exhibition is best viewed on a laptop or desktop. All descriptions presented here were provided by the artists. All sales are to be handled by the respective artists with no commission being charged. Sizes listed are presented in height-by-width format.
